Derivco Sweden does Code BEAM STO

Code BEAM STO took place in Stockholm between 31 May – 01 June. The two-day conference brought together 50 speakers who shared exciting talks about open-source applications based on Erlang, OTP, Elixir and BEAM just to name a few.

We asked three of our developers from Derivco Sweden a few questions about their experience at the Code BEAM STO.

What were your expectations for the conference?
Get to know about the information listed above.

Three words to describe it?
(This is really difficult …) practical, exciting, interesting

Favourite theme of the conference? Why?
There are too many of them, I do like the updates on Elixir/Erlang as knowledge sharing and some talks from Cisco/WhatsApp on how they are using Erlang.

Favourite speaker? Why?
Hard to say, I like the one from Natalie (https://codesync.global/speaker/natalia-chechina/) on the research they did on Erlang performance and robotics using Erlang. The reason being, it’s clear, thus easy to follow and good to see the comparisons with other languages.

Position: Backend Software Engineer & Tech Lead

Why did you want to attend the Code BEAM?
I was interested in learning new techniques I can use in my daily work and catching up with recent research and improvement of the platform.

What were your expectations for the conference?
Learning about the improvements made in the upcoming OTP 21 release and the latest advances in the state of the art.

Favourite speaker? Why?
Josef Svenningsson with “A gradual type system” because I’m interested in languages with strong type systems and ways of bringing their benefits over to Elixir.
