Derivco does DevConf!

By Sarah Pitman, marketing specialist, Derivco

The second annual Dev Conference (DevConf) was held on the 9th of March at the Vodacom Dome in Midrand, Johannesburg, attracting over 750 software developers from all over the country.

We were proud to be one of the platinum sponsors this year and wanted to make sure we brought our A game in terms of big brand experience and engagement. We debuted our brand-new exhibition stand, which details the different teams we’re made up of, the company culture, our values, as well as the types of people we look for to join us. Our Oculus Rift was the star of the show, on which we showcased our Jungle Jim VR experience, which blew the minds of many. Developers were surprised and excited by the fact that this game and software was designed in-house and many complimented us on the quality of both.

We were proud to have two of our own senior developers take the stage as speakers. Clinton van Blommestein and Steven van Heerden shared their expert knowledge with hundreds of eager listeners. Clinton, who attended the conference for the first time this year, said he was really pleased to see that it wasn’t a day filled with “marketing spiel” and people “promoting themselves and their businesses”. Instead, the day was dedicated to enthusiastic developers sharing what excites their passion and information on what they had been working on over the last year. Clinton spoke at length about a project he has been working on for the last few months: upgrading a core component of Derivco’s gaming systems. Clinton highlighted some of the lessons learnt while using Couchbase as a primary data store in their quest to support infinite scale for hundreds of millions of users while the system responds in real-time. Not difficult at all!

Steven, who spoke about ‘infrastructure as code and why it didn’t work for us’, went on to say that he found Devconf to be one of the premier developer-focused conferences in South Africa with excellent content and presenters, both at a world class level.

Overall we had a great day that was full of interest in the Derivco brand and our interactive software. We shared information, learnt from one another and were surrounded by like-minded people who share our love of code in a very real way. We can’t wait for next year!
